Gmail Notifier stopped working for me after they added CAPTCHA based authentication. It always gave me the error: cannot read your messages (bad data; 6)
The fix is to delete the cookies:
- In Internet Explorer, choose: Tools | Internet Options | General (tab) | Delete Cookies
- Restart gmail notifier
Works like a charm

If you get error 1 then you have a cookie problem or you gmail notifier is out of date and either needs cookies turning on or downloading the new version of G-notify... Hope this helps someone, it helped me :)

I'm suddenly having this problem too. Was working yesterday with no issues.
I've reinstalled.
I've deleted cookies.
Same issues.

Interesting...
I just started having this problem today as well. Nothing has changed on my end. Tried deleting cookies so far which did not work.
Will check to see if a newer version is available.

ok...if we all have the same problem and nobody can solve it removing the cookies I think it's a problem from Google, and soon there will be a solution! On Google website there are just solution for bad data 1 and 3...not for 6!
So let's wait...and hope! :D

Having the same problem here too. Didn't change a thing on my puter (that I know of). I did run scans with Adaware and Windows Defender. Just to throw that out, did any of you run antispyware scans?

Woke up this morning with the same problem on my home computer and work computer. I sent a message to gmail technical support this morning but haven't received a reply yet. If this is a problem on their end would've been nice for them to put the word out.

I'm also having this same problem, and this is the only, only, ONLY reference I have found to it. :\
I use Firefox so the IE cookie think didn't work - neither did clearing all my private data in Mozilla.

same issue here, and clearing cookies, uninstall/reinstall doesn't work
Google Groups has a huge thread on this, tons of people having the same problem:

waiting to hear from Google...

I've got it too. Cookies didn't help. It is obviously something going on at Google because we wouldn't all be miraculously having the same problem on the same day due to local problems on our computers. They'll figure it out soon I'm sure. I love Google services!

Google just posted this in that thread:
Hi all,
The team is aware of this problem with the Notifier, and our engineers
are currently working to resolve the problem. We apologize for any
inconvenience this issue may have caused.

I'm having the same issues; none of the recommended fixes work for me. All of the threads I found (except this one) were from almost 2 years ago. The problem seems to have resurfaced for a whole lot of us recently. Let's hope Google is working on a fix!

It seems like Google has made changes to the protocol that breaks GMail notifier. I just downloaded the latest version (1.0.25.0) from
[
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/notifier/notifier_windows.html] and I get the same error you do: Cannot read your messages (bad data;6)
Now to the good news: the PC version of the GMail notifier I am implementing for the Pocket PC works!
[

I will release a trimmed down version of the GUI [
http://www.egilh.com/blog/gallery/image/774.aspx] this weekend if Google does not fix the alerter.
Sorry, but I'm just too tired to fix the last bugs and release it tonight...

Just got it as well. I think it must be a google server issue, so nothing to do but wait!

...That's to say, restoring the XP (Downloading a new notifier, cleaning cookies and so on didn't work for me)

I was getting same error message bad data 6. I tried to follow some recomended steps like to delete cookies etc but did not help. An another thind I did was to log off from my Gmail account and restart Gmail notifier. This did not hepl as well. I repeated everything again, also restarted my PC but still without any change. Quite upset I turned off my PC and the next morning - what a surprise - the Gmail notifier is back to his function!
Although I am not a PC expert I think that there is not any connection between the IE7 if already installed and the Gmail notifier.
Hope that this might help to others!
cheers...

The Gmail notifier application [
http://www.egilh.com/blog/articles/poGmail.aspx] I recently released supports multiple accounts and does not have this problem.
